Handwritten letter on two sides addressed to Maria Antonietta Paolini, affectionately called Pao, and signed Mammolina with envelope stamped "Sanremo Imperia 1949" and Dutch stamp.
Specialist Notes
An interesting document relating to Montessori's time in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, in which she refers to material discovered among "old papers" that, she tells Paolini, could be useful in supporting her Nobel Prize nomination. She cites, among others, "The Punjab Educational Journal" from February 1946, which contains a lecture she gave focused on "orienting children's feelings toward humanity," which also features a portrait of her in Indian costume. Maria Montessori was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for three consecutive years, between 1949 and 1951, receiving numerous nominations from European political figures and academics. The nominations recognized the value of her pedagogical thought as a tool for building peace, based on the education of children and the formation of an international conscience. In particular, the role of the Montessori method in promoting understanding between peoples was emphasized. Despite the support she received, the prize was never awarded to her, as more politically-minded nominations prevailed in those years. However, her repeated and consistently supported nominations were an undoubted sign of the growing international recognition of her educational thought as a form of active pacifism.
