Information

A beautiful set of 38 photo postcards by Lieutenant Colonel Raffaele Repetto , taken in Fiume during D'Annunzio's expedition, between 1919 and 1920, 88 x 135 mm. With pen and ink notes by Repetto himself explaining the characters, dates, and situations depicted.

Specialist Notes

This extraordinary visual reportage allows us to delve into one of the most fascinating aspects of the Fiume enterprise: visual communication, propaganda, and the topography of the places where official events took place.

Repetto was a key figure in Rijeka's administration and military organization, always present at the scene of crucial events and thus a careful chronicler through these images. The subjects and situations are varied: official ceremonies, deployments of legionaries and troops, meetings between D'Annunzio and officials, rallies, government buildings, but also soldiers and civilians. We see infrastructure, ports, vessels, as well as parades alternating with moments of pause. A vivid insight into life in Rijeka during the crucial two-year period, live photographs that convey the sense of history better than any written account.
