Specialist Notes
This delightful edition features the first four parts copied from the Dunewalt edition (Antwerp, 1688), itself a forgery of the Barbin edition (Paris, 1678–1679), with Cause's engravings imitated by those of François Chauveau. This was itself copied in a three-volume Parisian edition of 1729. The edition is illustrated by Bernard Picart , who creates an allegorical frontispiece, a portrait of La Fontaine dated 1727, a vignette, and a lion-shaped header dated 1727, the latter illustrating an epitaph by Rousseau and the dedication to the Dauphin of France in the first part. The fables are illustrated by Hendrik Cause with 239 half-page etchings (those in the fifth part are unsigned).
