Questa nota ha un tono molto affettuoso e intimo, probabilmente indirizzata a uno dei suoi figli (potrebbe trattarsi di Léopoldine, Charles, Françoi-Victor ò Adèle). Il termine "anima di padre" è toccante e mette in luce il lato più tenero di Hugo, che spesso emerge anche nei suoi scritti privati e familiari.
