Information

Florence, Le Monnier, 1845. In 8° small. Paperback copy. Light browning.
Notice on the back cover which reads: “To the Works of Giacomo Leopardi printed in Florence in the year 1845 in three volumes by Felice Le Monnier it is necessary to complement this Poem in eight cantos entitled Paralipomeni della Batracomiomachia. Price: 3 francs”. Scattered foxing, otherwise a good uncut copy with burrs.
FLORENTINE REPRINT of the original edition actually published in Paris by Baudry in 1842. Subsequently, the Florentine publisher Le Monnier, in order to complete the edition of Giacomo Leopardi's Works that he had edited in 1845, purchased Baudry's remaining stock and put it back on sale, replacing the original yellow paperback with a new pink paperback bearing the note above. The success was notable, however, and once the stock was exhausted, Le Monnier proceeded to reprint the edition twice, leaving the original frontispiece containing Baudry's typographical data unchanged. The two Florentine reprints are distinguished, however, by the correction of errors in the text and the consequent elimination of the errata, as well as by the use of different printing characters. The following corrections are noted: on p. 53, r. 1 “MARAVIGLIA” is changed to “Maraviglia” and on p. 22, r. 8 the correct “carrozzevole” is replaced by the lectio facilior “carezzevole”. To further complicate matters, a Neapolitan forgery also appeared in those years, which however is easily distinguished by having 108 pp. and four stanzas per page instead of three.
