Information

Interesting and detailed manuscript note of innumerable relics, sold by a merchant, and coming from Rome, July 1780. Together with some purchase receipts, an expense note and part of a letter.

Specialist Notes

Document of absolute interest, where among the relics are listed: part of the skull of St. John the Baptist; of the pallium of St. Joseph; and then bones of St. Paul, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, St. James, St. Martha etc.
In the eighteenth century, the trade in relics was a widespread phenomenon, often not very transparent and linked to devotional practices, but also to speculation and falsification. Relics, both of martyrs' bodies and sacred objects, were highly sought after by churches, sovereigns and pilgrims, who considered them sources of thaumaturgical power and instruments for devotion.
