Information
Framed paper document, 650 x 470 mm. This is the official authorization, at the request and by order of Cardinal Annibale Albani, for the temporary removal of the Veronica in the Vatican Basilica in order to have an embroidered silk case made to protect the relic. The Document, with a dry seal, is signed by the major and minor canons of St. Peter's, the text is finely hand-crafted. The large design, in typical Roman Baroque style, represents Faith with the cross and the "Holy Face" flanked by Prudence and Fortitude; the three figures seated on an entablature from the ends of which descend, delimiting the gold text on 15 lines, trophies of a religious nature on one side, military on the other. In the center, above the text, two winged putti support the Albani coat of arms surmounted by the cardinal's hat.
Specialist Notes
Carlo Roncalli from Urbino was frequently in the service of Cardinal Albani, who called him to Urbino from Rome in 1711, where the painter was engaged in the decoration of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
