Paris, 1776. 3 volumes in 8°. Three frontispieces (one repeated) with etched titles and plates by Jean-Michel Moreau, typographic music in the text. Smaller engravings, also by Jean-Michel Moreau, throughout the volume, including charming depictions of contemporary French society. Headings and endpapers throughout. The volumes contain the score and lyrics of 264 songs by the playwright, singer, and member of the French Academy Pierre Laujon (1727-1811). Fine black morocco binding. Five-ribbed spines with gold-engraved titles.
Specialist Notes
The first two volumes form a complete series. The third volume, Les a propos de la Folie , is a continuation of Les a propos de la Societé (volumes I and II). "The illustrations are delightfully graceful and are among Moreau's best" (Cohen 604). Pierre Laujon directed the Chantilly celebrations for the Prince of Condé.
