Portraits of Dante and Foscolo, engraved plates depicting sections and views of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, the mausoleum of Ravenna, the cemetery of Chiswick where Foscolo is buried and a facsimile of his handwriting, marginal foxing otherwise perfect copy, binding in half blue leather and marbled cardboard.
Specialist Notes
First edition of the Comedy edited by Foscolo of which appeared in 1825 a first volume "Discourse on the text and on the different opinions prevalenti intorno alla storia e alla emendazione critica della Commedia di Dante" printed in London by Pickering. Although the manuscripts of the comments on the three canticles were almost ready, the poet's death in 1827 interrupted the project. It was Giuseppe Mazzini a decade later who tracked down the autographs to prepare the present edition, of which he signed the introduction anonymously introducing himself as "An Italian".
