Specialist Notes
Rare to find complete with appendix volume. After the success achieved with the publication in 1781 of the "Description of the ancient and current state of Molise", Galanti was commissioned by Prime Minister Giuseppe Beccadelli to extend the work to the entire Kingdom, beyond the lighthouse. From 1782 to 1785, with the help of his brother Luigi, he made a long journey through the southern provinces of the kingdom, collecting a substantial amount of geographical, political, economic and administrative data. In 1786 the first volume of the "Geographical and political description of Sicilies" appeared and met the opposition of the censors, led by Ferdinando Galiani, who tried to prevent its publication, but the work nevertheless saw the light of day thanks to direct government intervention. The second volume was published in 1788, the third in 1789 and the last in 1790. The work "is a very complex work, which contains an analysis of the history, economy and administrative and judicial institutions of the Kingdom. This investigation also highlights the influence on cultural aspects exerted by the two crucial fulcrums of the society of the time: the nobility and the clergy. With a dry and clear prose, Galanti explains in detail the state of backwardness of the Kingdom and tries, at the same time, to explain what the causes of this situation are and what the government can do to reform it".
