Paris, David, 1780-1781. In 4th. 7 volumes (of 8 constituting the first series). Engraved title pages, 572 tipped-in engravings, original sponged calfskin binding with gilt frames on the plates and gilt decorations on the spine, sprayed cuts.
Specialist Notes
First edition. The first 8 volumes were printed in 1780 (the date on the engraved title page indicates 1781), volumes X and XI in 1797 and later. Precious work illustrating the findings of the excavations of Herculaneum, which began around 1738, with engravings by François Anne David and texts by Sylvain Maréchal (1750-1803).
