First French edition, illustrated with a title page repeated in each volume and 360 tipped-in plates engraved in chalcography by François-Anne David and, for the most part, colored in bistre, binding in half brown leather and cardboard from the 19th century

VARIABLE AND SOPHISTICATED EDITION.
The plates mainly reproduce antiquities from the personal cabinet of William Hamilton. He was a diplomat and patron in Italy for over thirty-five years and responsible for the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The first edition of the work, in 4 folio volumes, was published in Naples in 1766-1767. Blackmer, n°847 - Cohen, 474 - Brunet, II, 536.
