Specialist Notes
The volume contains three distinct works: 1 °. Second original edition of the translation-remake of Inquiry concerning Virtue or Merit published in 1699 by Shaftesbury. Compared to the first edition of 1745 (Amsterdam, Zacharie Chatelain), the new edition contains a modification to the dedication: & nbsp; no longer "A mon Frére" but "A ma Tante". Probably a sceta of the new publisher but it is said that Diderot himself wanted to play a joke on his brother priest. 2 °. Interpolation on pp. 209-316 of the Maximes of La Rochefoucauld. 3 °. Reprint of the Pensées philosophiques (published by D. in 1746) under the title: Autres Pensées qui ne seront peut-être pas du goût & nbsp; de tout le monde, mais que l'on donne pour ce qu'elles sont, ainsi que le précis de quelques reponses qui y ont été faites (pp. 317-368). & nbsp;
