Specialist Notes
Jean Paul De Gua de Malves (Carcassonne ca. 1712 - Paris 1786) mathematician, mineralogist, economist. He had an ecclesiastical education but it seems that he never became a priest, dedicating himself instead to scientific studies. His first work was a work on analytical geometry inspired by the geometry of Descartes (1740) and a commentary on the works of Newton. He later turned his attention to economics, as demonstrated by the edition of this debate held in the London Chamber of Commerce, preceded by his long "avant-propos" on the problem of the interest rate on loans. The translation of the three speeches follows: Barnard John. Discussions for and against the reduction of the interest of silver. WALPOLE Robert.
