India
height circa 57 cm.
Hemispherical iron skull, dating back to the first half of the 18th century, restored on the front, near the top: the cusp (probably damaged or lost) has been replaced with a brass disc engraved with floral motifs, in the center of which is a small jug with oblique spirals. The lower part extended by a band approximately 2.8 cm wide; the original holes for the mail neck-defense reused to fix this band, which features an additional row of holes to support the heavy late 19th-century mail neck-defense. The nosepiece from the same period as the mail neck-defense, while the crest holders were probably removed in an earlier period. The surface of the helmet is divided into six sections with central cartouches featuring inscriptions in Arabic characters, as is the entire gold decoration; small cartouches at the top and larger cartouches towards the original base are adorned with effigies of animals. The added band is decorated, together with the base of the skull, with cartouches featuring inscriptions alternating with cartouches with floral decorations. A curious reuse of an ancient skull, adapted for a late 19th-century warrior.
