“NEC NUPER DEFECI” (Not even now have I fainted): these are the words that the engraver of the coin has Mary pronounce, whose intercession was said to have been essential in eradicating the plague epidemic that struck a ship of Greek origin that arrived in Venice in 1793.
To prevent the spread of the virus, the authorities of the Venetian Republic applied the rigorous health measures of the time, removing the vessels and placing them in quarantine on the island of Poveglia, which had been used as a medical isolation site since the Middle Ages. During their stay on the island, some of the sailors died and were buried there.
According to historical sources, there are no reliable figures on the total number of dead buried on Poveglia. However, its long function as a lazaret and burial site contributed to its reputation as the "cursed island."
