Paris, NB Duchesne, 1758. In 4°. 2 vols. With several copperplate plates, some folded, light foxing and browning, small tear without loss on one plate, contemporary leather bindings, gilt titles within inserts on the spine, red edges, various losses. Traces of a paper bookplate on the inside cover.
Specialist Notes
Louis-Bertrand Castel (1688–1757) was a French Jesuit, mathematician, and philosopher. Active in Paris, he distinguished himself as a science popularizer and critic of Newtonianism, advocating a more Cartesian view of physics. He is best known for the invention of the "ocular harpsichord," a theoretical instrument that aimed to translate sounds into colors, reflecting his interest in the relationships between mathematics, music, and sensory perception.
