Berlin, Reimer, 1823-24. In 8°. 3 volumes. Light browning and foxing, half-chagrin binding with corners and marbled paper, missing spines, defects. Bookplate on the flyleaf of the third volume.
Specialist Notes
An Italian-born mathematician and astronomer, Lagrange was one of the leading figures in 18th-century European mathematics. He played a key role in the consolidation of mathematical analysis, developing the calculus of variations, contributing to analytical mechanics, and reformulating the theory of polynomials. A professor in Turin, then in Berlin, and finally at the École Normale and the Bureau des Longitudes in Paris, he profoundly influenced the development of modern mathematics.
