Specialist Notes

Giusto Bellavitis (Bassano del Grappa, 1803 – Tezze sul Brenta, 1880) was one of the leading Italian mathematicians of the nineteenth century. Largely self-taught, after years of independent study, he obtained the chair of descriptive geometry at the University of Padua in 1845, where he also taught algebra, analytic geometry, and physics. He is best known for developing the method of equipollences, which anticipated fundamental concepts of modern vector theory. The author of numerous scientific works, he was a member of important academies and a senator of the Kingdom of Italy.
