Silver-plated metal skull, brass crest with lion's head at the end, long black horsehair tail, gold plate with the inscription “PIO XI”; turban in phoca vitulina fur with front frieze depicting the papal emblem on a silver plate; velvet chin-strap reinforced with gilded brass scales worked into laurel fronds (one scale broken on the left side near the earflap). Complete with plume. Brown leather chin-strap with red stitching and silk cap with the initials “G A.” Beautiful and rare helmet.
