Information

Gigi Riva's autographed card, wearing a Cagliari jersey, released in 2019 by Panini for the Chronicles Elite series. Gigi Riva, whose real name is Luigi Riva, is an Italian football legend, best known for his role as a striker during the golden age of the Italian national team and for his home club, Cagliari. Riva is considered one of the best Italian strikers of all time and one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of Italian football. Born on November 7, 1944, in Leggiuno, in the province of Varese, Gigi Riva began his football career at AC Milan, before moving to Cagliari in 1963. It was with Cagliari that Riva enjoyed his most prolific and successful period, becoming the symbol of the Sardinian team and winning a Scudetto in 1970. For the Italian national team, Riva scored 35 goals in 42 games, a record that stood for many years. In 1976, due to physical problems, Riva was forced to retire from professional football, ending a brilliant but unfortunately all too short-lived career. After retiring, Gigi Riva remained involved in the world of football as a manager and ambassador for Italian football. He died on January 22, 2024.
