"There is a Mad King in Denmark" is a historical novel written by Dario Fo that tells the story of Christian VII, king of Denmark from 1766 to 1808, and his court during the eighteenth century. Christian VII, as already mentioned in the previous answer, suffered from serious mental disorders that made him unable to govern.
Fo's novel is not a simple historical biography, but a work full of inventiveness and black humor. The author uses the king's madness as a metaphor to criticize the corruption, hypocrisy and absolutism of the time.
