Information

Original Popeye cover by Pierluigi Sangalli for "Supplemento a Braccio" published by Bianconi, measuring 30 x 21 cm. Pierluigi Sangalli (born in Monza in 1938) was a central figure in Italian comics, best known for being the graphic and creative force behind Popeye, published by Bianconi. Together with Sandro Dossi, Sangalli took E.C. Segar's character and adapted it for an Italian audience. Under his direction, Popeye became less edgy and more dynamic, with stories and covers that emphasized a surreal, slapstick humor, perfect for newsstands in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Sangalli's covers for Bianconi magazines (such as Popeye, Geppo, and Popeye) have entered the collective imagination and today represent a precious piece of Italian pop art. For many readers, that version of the sailor—slightly different from the American original—remains the "definitive" version, thanks precisely to the visual power and charm that Sangalli managed to convey from the first page.
