Information
Autographed witness by Carl Lewis, authenticated by the JSA. Track and field legend Carl Lewis is inextricably linked to the history of the US men's 4x100-meter relay team, helping to shape some of its greatest moments and, later, criticizing its failures. Lewis reached the pinnacle of his Olympic relay career, winning gold at both the 1984 Los Angeles Games (where he equaled Jesse Owens' four gold medals) and the 1992 Barcelona Games. At the latter, the American quartet, with Lewis as the final runner, set a stunning world record of 37.40. His extraordinary speed and ability to maintain composure at the end of the race made him the perfect anchor for Team USA. However, after his retirement, the relationship between Lewis and the US relay team became more contentious. In particular, following the men's team's shock elimination from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), Lewis was unsparing in his harsh criticism. He called the quartet's performance, which finished sixth in their heats and was therefore eliminated from the final, "a total embarrassment" and "unacceptable," highlighting technical issues with the exchanges and a clear lack of leadership.
