Confronted with Jan Saudek's photographs, one is always left somewhat disoriented: from the chromatics that enhance bodies moving sinuously within an interior, to the elegant prints that clash with the boldness of the shots, to the strange handwritten dates at the margins that seem to push the photograph back by a century, but above all, the magical atmosphere that lingers. This was the way the Prague-based photographer sublimated the institutional indifference that surrounded him. From the window of his studio, located in a basement, he would let in wonderful female figures whom he transformed into models.
