Si dice, non a torto, che gli spagnoli sono così imbevuti di surrealismo da non riuscire a liberarsene e questo vale a maggior ragione per i catalani come Fontcuberta. Fin dagli esordi negli anni Settanta si segnala per le sue immagini enigmatiche e la creazione di animali immaginari che però vivono in contesti quotidiani creando quelle che lui stesso definisce come post-immagini.
