Although Ugo Mulas is known for other complex works, those created in the world of entertainment not only demonstrate his versatility, but also attest to his technical skill when dealing with theatre photography—characterized by lighting that selectively cuts through the darkness of the stage and by the need to move as little as possible near the stage, making every shot difficult.In this case, however, the photographer was able to work with greater freedom because the performance—Orlando Furioso—had been conceived by the visionary director Luca Ronconi to be staged in open spaces as well. This explains the proximity to the scene, which makes this photograph so striking and vivid.
The two dancers in the second image, on the other hand, are photographed inside what was once known as the Ristorante Carminati – Night Club – Varietà, a venue overlooking Piazza del Duomo, whose upper floor hosted several dance halls open until late at night
