Literature
Leonardo Sciascia, Feste religiose in Sicilia, fotografie di Ferdinando Scianna, Leonardo da Vinci, Bari, 1964, ill. n. 3
A very young Ferdinando Scianna exhibited his first photographic exhibition, which, he was informed, was appreciated by a very special visitor: Leonardo Sciascia. Summoning up his courage and drawing on his already well-formed determination, the young man contacted the writer for the first moment of what would be a very long story of deep friendship. But to tell the story properly, we must inevitably turn to books, and Feste religiose in Sicilia (Religious Festivals in Sicily) is the right one, written with the words of one and the photographs of the other, even though when it was published, Sciascia was credited as the author and Scianna was given the subtitle. This photograph, taken from the series published there, possesses the expressive immediacy of that work, which still retains a power that smacks of antiquity and keeps the banality of mannered folklore at bay.Contact
