Charles Marville, pseudonym of Charles François Bossu, was a rather reserved man, while his photographs, so precise and calibrated, were highly successful among his contemporaries. This allowed him to take on the role of official photographer of Paris in 1862. Due to a series of important coincidences, his images took on great value because he lived in a period when the city – always known for its changes – was literally transformed from an urban planning point of view. Baron Haussmann, commissioned by Napoleon III, redesigned the city by intervening in the working-class neighbourhoods, which were often in poor sanitary condition, with actual demolitions and the construction of large boulevards, which on the one hand were intended to make the city even more spectacular but on the other hand were intended to hinder popular demonstrations by enlarging the spaces. Very interesting in this regard is this shot of the Caserne, built to a design by George-Eugène Haussmann as police headquarters: precisely because it was the seat of power, the Communards set it on fire the year after this shot was taken. Much like Atget was doing at the same time, but for his own pleasure, Marvile photographed above all the Paris that would disappear, and this has become fundamental material not only for photographers but also for urban planners, historians and anthropologists.
