It is difficult to define Bruno Munari's creativity in a single word. He was known as a graphic artist, sculptor, designer, writer and theorist, but also as a photographer who was always close to the spirit of the avant-garde, from his youthful passion for Futurism onwards. The work we present here is a very significant example of his great ability to investigate the language of photography itself. It is one of the Polarised Light Projections that was presented in Como in 1969 as part of the Campo Urbano. Interventi Estetici nella dimensione collettiva urbana (Aesthetic Interventions in the Urban Collective Dimension) exhibition, which he curated together with photographer Ugo Mulas and critic Luciano Caramel. As Munari himself wrote to explain his performance, “From the balcony of the Broletto, slides prepared for polarised light are projected using a slide projector. The changing colours are visible from inside and outside a screen composed of twenty white umbrellas that move and change shape on the screen itself”.
