“Photography can engage with these places with a heightened awareness, whilst at the same time managing to marvel at them, or to be amazed as if it were the first time we were looking at this land overflowing with stories, signs and memories,” wrote Luigi Ghirri regarding the Via Emilia, and it was in this spirit that he launched a project which culminated in 1986 in an exhibition held in Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Ferrara, and in a book, Esplorazioni sulla Via Emilia, which serves as the perfect link between Viaggio in Italia from two years earlier and the subsequent Paesaggio italiano, which in 1989 reaffirmed the need to create a different way of looking at the landscape, one capable of rejecting any hierarchy among appearances. In Esplorazioni, Ghirri not only gathered around him a group of photographers who shared this new vision but also forged a harmonious relationship with the writing of authors such as Italo Calvino, Tonino Guerra, Giorgio Messori and, of course, Gianni Celati. Travelling along a route from Rimini to Piacenza, each using their own means of expression, they all recounted the profound changes and great transformations of a territory, ‘keeping alive the relationship between image and writing’ to record new sensations, delve into memories and stir desires, using the Via Emilia not only as a guiding thread but also as a metaphor for our relationship with the territory.
