The icon of the Mother of God known as the “Burning Bush” takes its name from the well-known miracle recounted by Moses in the Old Testament. In the third chapter of Exodus, God calls Moses on Mount Horeb from the midst of a bush that burned without being consumed, entrusting him with the mission of freeing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and revealing His name: “I Am Who I Am.” The miracle of the Burning Bush is thus interpreted as a prefiguration of the birth of Christ from the Virgin Mary: the Virgin gave birth to the Savior while remaining incorrupt, just as the bush burned yet was not consumed.
