Information
Saint Demetrius is shown on horseback, wearing armor and a cloak, thrusting his long lance against the Bulgarian king Kaloyan, who falls into an abyss together with his white steed. The episode refers to a legend according to which Demetrius of Thessaloniki, one of the most venerated warrior saints of the Byzantine world, who lived in the 4th century, miraculously appeared during the siege of Thessaloniki by Kaloyan (1207), defeating him with his spear. This iconography, similar to that of Saint George slaying the dragon — symbol of the victory over evil — spread throughout the Byzantine world between the 13th and 14th centuries, and appeared in Russian painting from the 16th century.
