At the center of the icon is the Descent of Christ into Hades. Beneath His feet lie the shattered gates of hell. The Cross in His left hand symbolizes victory over death. Kneeling at His sides are Adam and Eve — the latter dressed in red, symbolizing humanity — with hands covered in adoration. Christ grasps Adam by the wrist, leading him and Eve out of Hades: He has paid Adam’s debt and redeemed all mankind from original sin. Behind Adam stand King David and his son Solomon; behind Eve appear Moses with the tablets of the Law, John the Baptist, and others awaiting deliverance.
