The icon depicts Saint Nicholas of Mozhaisk, an iconographic variant of the more renowned Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, bishop of Myra. This representation, typical of Russian popular devotion, is connected to the legend that the saint appeared in the sky armed with a sword and holding a church in his hand during the siege of Mozhaisk (14th century), terrifying the invaders.
