The second session (lots 168–207) features forty paintings of extraordinary quality, originating from prestigious private collections. Taking centre stage is the masterpiece by Francesco Guardi, Pope Pius VI Taking Leave of the Doge, a museum-quality work that forms part of a celebrated Venetian cycle painted in 1782.
Alongside this highlight are precious examples from the 15th and 16th centuries, including Madonna and Child by Jacopo da Montagnana and another panel of the same subject by Pieter I Coecke van Aelst.
Appearing on the market for the first time is Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Giovanni Francesco Crivelli. From the great 17th-century pictorial tradition come Judith and Holofernes from the workshop of Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, David Celebrated by the Maidens of Israel by Giovanni Battista Spinelli, from a Neapolitan private collection, and the previously unpublished Saint Ursula by Valerio Castello. Also worth of note are an intense Saint Andrew by Matthias Stomer and a Still Life with Fruit and Monkey by an anonymous Flemish painter active in Italy during the Baroque period.
Bridging into the following century and already reflecting a rocaille taste is The Triumph of Flowers by Andrea Belvedere, remarkable for its strikingly theatrical composition, large format, and strong visual impact.
