We thank Professor Riccardo Lattuada for confirming the present attribution after examining the work through color photographs. The scholar assigns the painting to the artist’s Neapolitan period (1633–1637).
L'intensa e ascetica figura di questo Santo trova un confronto con molte altre dipinte da Stomer, tra cui il San Girolamo oggi conservato a Nantes, Musée des Beaux - Arts, il pastore a destra nell'Adorazione a Vaduz, Liechtenstein Collection, o in quello a sinistra nell'Adorazione a Leeds, City Art Gallery, tanto da far ipotizzare l'utilizzo dello stesso modello. Anche il modo di rappresentare le mani, nodose e gonfie dalla fatica, rese con pennellate materiche, è tipica di Stomer. Il santo, illuminato con forti effetti chiaroscurali, emerge dall'ombra del fondo, in cui si intravede una croce diagonale, suo attributo iconografico.
