The work is accompanied by an expertise by Mauro Lucco, dated 9 June 2003, which advances the attribution to Claude Vignon and who places the painting in relation to the Saint Jerome in a private Canadian collection but on loan to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (P. Patch Bassani, Claude Vignon , Paris 1993, no. 1, p. 162-164), a prototype of which several replicas are known. Patch Bassani, in his monograph dedicated to the French master, reports two copies: one in Paris in the church of Saint-Jacques-du-Haut-Pas ( ibidem , p. 163, no. 1ca), the other in the Carmelite convent of San Silvestro in Montecompatri ( ibidem , p. 163, no. 1cb).
