The painting reworks an unusual iconography painted by Luca Giordano for the viceroy of Naples, Gaspar de Bracamonte, count of Penaranda. Giordano's work, completed in 1660 for the church of Saints Joseph and Teresa in Pontecorvo, is now preserved in Naples, Capodimonte Museum.
