The painting offered in the lot can be compared to some known and autographed examples by Paul Bril of a similar subject but of different formats and supports: in particular with the Market in Campo Vaccino , in Dresden, Gemaeldegalerie Alte Meister, and with the Landscape with ruins of Campo Vaccino and the rainbow , formerly Rome, private collection (see F. Cappelletti, Paul Bril e la pittura di paesaggio a Roma , Rome 2006, p. 104, p. 243 cat. 54, p. 245 cat. 57).
Paul Bril, between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century, can be considered the inventor of a genre that had great fortune for centuries, that is the painting of classical ruins in which small scenes of daily life are set. These works were purchased by collectors, especially Nordic ones, as a memento of the Eternal City, even if in a fairy-tale and whimsical adaptation, in which the monuments of the Forum were recomposed with precision but also with a touch of fantasy in the juxtapositions and framing.
