For the present portrait, an attribution to the famous Baroque era portraitist Mary Beale (Barrow 1633 - London 1699) has been suggested on stylistic grounds. The painter, who carried out her activity mainly in London, is also documented in Little Saxham, Suffolk, whose Baron William Crofts was the brother of the noblewoman sitter, Catherine Crofts (1637-1686).Contact
