Tratto, con varianti, dal dipinto di omonimo soggetto di Pietro della Vecchia, a Bordeaux, Musée des Beaux-Arts. La fortuna della composizione del pittore veneziano, insolita e originale, in cui un giovane allievo viene introdotto alla scienza dei numeri da un maestro che si trova alle sue spalle, è testimoniata da altre due versioni, l'una a Modena, Galleria Estense, e l'altra in collezione privata a Thiene. Pietro della Vecchia fu un artista poliedrico e mercante d'arte, famoso ai suoi tempi per saper ben imitare i modi di Giorgione.
