Ettore Ferrari, famous author of monuments as well as prominent politician and prominent freemason, son-in-law of the painter Johann Jakob Frey, cultivated a passion for painting throughout his life and in particular for watercolor. Known above all for his successful sculptural activity, and in particular for the Roman monuments to Giordano Bruno in Campo de 'Fiori and the one, realised posthumously, to Mazzini at the Circus Maximus, accompanied, although less well known, an intense pictorial activity. In fact, as early as 1870 he began to accompany artists such as Ettore Roesler Franz and Onorato Carlandi on their excursions in the Roman countryside, to paint live those evocative views that today also represent precious historical as well as artistic testimonies. In 1904 he was, with the ironic nickname of Golden Eagle, one of the founders of the XXV of the Roman Campagna group. As a painter he preferred above all glimpses of wide and sunny landscapes, showing a strong attention to the luministic traits and finely balanced compositions in the perspective planes.
