Information

tempera on paper
270 x 344 mm (sheet size)
bears the initials H.S . on the lower center column, and A.S. on the disc held by the monkey

Taken with variations from a well-known engraving by Jan Both (Utrecht 1618-1652).

Original and curious is the insert of the chained monkey, which holds a disc with the monogram AS.

In Flemish art, particularly in the works of David Teniers, monkeys are represented with a satirical-grotesque meaning, to ridicule some human behavior. In other contexts, however, the presence of the monkey alludes to the mimetic capacity of painting: just as the monkey imitates man, in fact, painting imitates reality.
