The figure of his father, Constantine, one of the most prominent figures in Neapolitan political and intellectual life of the time, dominated Gregory's life and influenced his education from the very beginning. Gregory himself emphasizes this in the Preface to the "Istoria delle leggi," where he recalls how his father had constantly guided him in his studies of feudal and municipal law of the Kingdom, which were influenced by Giambattista Vico, his professor of history, philosophy, and literature. That the idea and plan for the work were Constantine's is confirmed by Giustiniani, to whom Ginesio "had naively confessed it a thousand times." The inspiring intent behind the initiative was to rewrite Giannoni's Istoria, eliminating its "poisons" and strengthening its legal and historical aspects. The "History of the Laws" is entirely dependent on Giannone's work and follows in its footsteps, relegating political and religious issues to the margins, erasing the anti-curialist element, and toning down the aspirations for civil and religious reform that had dominated it. The result was a "moderate version" of the "Istoria civile."
