Specialist Notes
Francesco Serao (1702-1783), a physician and professor in Naples, was a leading figure in eighteenth-century medicine and one of the first modern scholars of Vesuvius. In 1738, he wrote the History of the Fire of Vesuvius, the result of careful field observations, with descriptions of lava, ash, and volcanic materials. The work was widely distributed and translated into French and English, contributing to the birth of volcanology as a scientific discipline.
