Naples, for Ottaviano Beltrano (at the request of Pietro Aniello Parrino), 1644. In 4°. Elegant, richly decorated allegorical frontispiece, coat of arms on the title page, noble coats of arms in the text, browning and foxing, otherwise a very good copy, binding in brown half leather and pink sponged cardboard from the 18th century, with blue spray edges.
Specialist Notes
A rare second edition of a comprehensive and detailed compendium of Neapolitan history , the work of the polymath and printer Ottavio Beltrano, a native of Terranova di Sibari, who was active as a publisher in Naples, Ancona, and Sorrento (his first book was printed there in 1637). This is his principal text as an author, defined by Alfredo Cioni, in the "Dizionario biografico degli italiani Treccani," as "a sort of economical guide based on second-hand materials." The work was published in 1640 and was reprinted, after this edition, in 1648; it was notable success, so much so that further editions were published under the pseudonym (as some believe) of Enrico Bacco. He is credited with editing the famous "Almanacco di Rutilio Benincasa."
