Specialist Notes

THE FIRST GREAT COMPLETE HISTORY OF ABRUZZI. Antonio Lodovico Antinori, a scholar originally from L'Aquila, made historical research the aim of his life and his writings constitute a milestone for anyone wishing to retrace the thousand-year-old events of this region. The four volumes of this Collection were published between 1781 and 1783, shortly after the author's death. Muratori appreciated his work and included some of his writings and a history of L'Aquila in Antiquitates Italicae Medii Aevi, VI, Mediolani 1742, and a collection of unpublished inscriptions in the Novus thesaurus veterum inscriptionum, also in 1742. In those years, having concluded his spiritual retreat at the Oratory of San Filippo Neri, Pope Benedict XIV appointed him director of the Library of the Institute of Sciences in Bologna. Unfortunately, he was forced to resign due to health reasons. In 1745, he became Archbishop of Lanciano and, subsequently, of Matera and Acerenza. His poor health forced him to retire to private life in 1757 and return to L'Aquila, where he devoted himself full-time to his studies. He died in his hometown in March 1778. His manuscripts are preserved in the Provincial Library of L'Aquila and are organized in fifty-one folio volumes.
