"However, no one has yet thought of writing a Manual or Guide for the curious and for travellers, which would be sincere and without bias, indicating only the current state of things regarding monuments of art, how and where they are found, neglecting those which no longer exist... I have used the simple narrative style, and have added to it, in short, that point of history relating to each object, so as not to exceed the limits of brevity, and betray the idea proposed to me.
