Specialist Notes
A rare original edition of this seminal work on the history of brigandage, one of the most important nineteenth-century accounts of Southern Italy after 1860. Published during the years of heated parliamentary debate on the Southern Question, it contains a broad and well-documented analysis of brigand bands, interpreted as a political and social reaction to the fall of the Bourbons and Garibaldi's dictatorship. Giacomo Bonafede Oddo (Gratteri, Palermo, 1827 – Lascari, 1906) was a central figure in the post-Risorgimento debate, developing strongly critical positions regarding clericalism and institutional responsibilities in the governance of the South.
